Calm and departure, experience and curiosity, body and soul - Rolf Kühn finds such opposites extremely attractive. The excitement remains, it is unpredictable and ageless. And so the 88-year-old once again improvises and moves through new musical territory with "Yellow + Blue", delves deeply into favourite ballads and legendary love songs, but also elicits new, unheard sounds from them. Because a sentimental retrospective has never been his thing. In his new quartet with pianist Frank Chastenier, bassist Lisa Wulff and Tupac Mantilla (percussion), "Europe's greatest clarinet player and free spirit" (Jazzthetik) contrasts his sensitive side with an unbridled love of experimentation. His vocabulary on the clarinet is still infinitely elastic, intense and individual, full of surprises, inexhaustible in terms of sound painting. For the first time, Rolf Kühn brings together some of his favorite songs from six decades of lived jazz history in a new program inspired by the magnetism of opposites.
