Roman Market at the Vicus and in the Roman Fort with traders, exhibitors and craftsmen from 29 April to 1 May 2017 You fancy immersing yourself in Roman times for once? You want to stroll along ancient market stalls in an atmospheric atmosphere and feel the breath of the past? Then you should definitely visit the Roman fort Saalburg next weekend. Here everything revolves around the Roman market for three days. From Saturday, April 29 to Monday, May 1, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., guided tours, presentations and hands-on activities will make the theme so vivid that you will enjoy it. You can experience the market hustle and bustle with all your senses and take a wonderful journey through time. The stalls of the market traders will be set up at the vicus and in the inner area of the fort. Visitors will be able to experience a whole lot here and get a good idea of what the market activities of yesteryear may have looked like. Shoemakers, goldsmiths, ointment makers, bone carvers, board weavers, fishermen and many other traders will be offering their wares and providing an insight into the life of traders to interested visitors. A Roman doctor will also be on hand to explain to visitors what medical care was like for the Romans and what surgical instruments were already available at the time. Various workshops will be offered (e.g. bone carving, pottery on the wheel, turning wooden rings, Roman school). The soldiers of the 4th Vindelic cohort from Großkrotzenburg will again set up camp in the fort. Roman soldiers in full equipment will explain camp life to visitors young and old and show what everyday life as a soldier was like in the Roman army. The Cornicen, a Roman soldier who was already used as a bugler in the militia army in early Roman times, will show the children how to elicit a sound from the Cornu. Outside the fort at the "vicus", merchants will offer their wares such as oil lamps, wax tablets, glassware, Roman jewelry (replicas), and goldsmiths' work at their booths. We will also have a replica of a Roman barge on display. Many friendly institutions will also be active at the Roman Fort Saalburg during this extended weekend and will offer hands-on activities for the children, such as Augusta Raurica from Augst (Switzerland) with plaster reliefs, the Museum Schwarzenacker with children's games, the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier with a wheel of fortune, the Hessenpark with a handicraft demonstration, the Förderverein Museum Schloß Fechenbach with clothing and the Förderverein Römisches Forum Waldgirmes. Guided tours of the fort will be offered every hour. For the physical well-being provides the museum cafeé Taberna with culinary according to Roman recipes or dishes from today's cuisine. Infos Admission on these days is seven euros for adults and five euros for children. The family ticket costs fourteen euros. There are no discounts or group rates. Admission includes participation in all guided tours and activities. The archaeological park and museum are open from 9am to 6pm, as is the museum shop. The museum cafeé Taberna opens from 10 am to 6 pm. Bus line 5 will run from Bad Homburg to the Saalburg every ½ hour on these three days. The first bus leaves Bad Homburg Bf for Saalburg at 9.25 a.m., the last from Saalburg to Bad Homburg Bf at 6.46 p.m.
