This is how it can go. There's a young Northern Irishman named Ryan McMullan playing a concert in Shepherd's Bush and Ed Sheeran is in the room as a guest. "We'd met a few times before, hung out, but after the London show he actually asked me if I was free in March and April," says the singer/songwriter.
He was then promptly on the road with Sheeran.
As Sheeran's support. "Hey, he's probably the biggest star on the planet right now, to have his support is just incredible and wonderful."
Now, however, McMullan is on the road on his own dime.
His first EP, Listen, was released in the spring of 2015, just four tracks but with them the young man from the coastal town of Portaferry, south of Belfast on the Irish Sea, left plenty of impression.
Thanks to a distinctive voice that is able to give pop ballads an unmistakable, raw blues feel. In January 2017, he followed up with another EP, "A Winter's Coat," which now lends its name to the tour, highlighting his talent for packaging stories, emotions and experiences from the Irish idyll into the appropriate tones and verses. While the songs here may seem more reflective, the interpretation is no less stirring.
