Musical drama in one act
Libretto Richard Strauss, based on the drama <.x>Ampersandraquo;Salomé« by Oscar Wilde in translation by Hedwig Lachmann First performed in Dresden
In German. With surtitles.
Oscar Wilde turned the biblical story of Salome and John the Baptist into a scandalous one-act play, and Richard Strauss into a musical psychological thriller: the princess falls in love with Jochanaan, public enemy No. 1, a fundamentalist opponent of decadent society. The incarcerated anarchist, who swears doom on anything that goes against his religious worldview, refuses the spoiled teenager's desire.
A trial of strength ensues: Jochanaan provokes through radical asceticism, Salome shows her power through erotic manipulation. Both ways end fatally. But Salome sings: "The secret of love is stronger than the secret of death".
