May 2017 - a perhaps otherwise unassuming jazz musician from Portugal takes to the stage at the Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev. With his eyes closed, he sings, in true Chet Baker fashion, a jazz ballad and enchants an audience of millions with his voice and extraordinary performance. No dancers, no laser show, no ESC glamour.
With "Amar Pelos Dois" Salvador Sobral (born 1989 in Lisbon) is the first participant for Portugal to win the Eurovision Song Contest and gets the highest score ever awarded in the history of the competition. "We live in a world of completely interchangeable music - fast-food music without any content," he explains after receiving the ESC trophy, "Music is not fireworks. Music is feeling. Let's try to change something and bring music back!"
But the former psychology student, who comes from an old aristocratic family, is retiring from the public eye shortly after his ESC win to undergo a heart transplant. Fans spent months fearing for the health of the musician, who was already born with a heart defect.
2018 - Salvador Sobral is on the mend, having successfully undergone heart surgery, appearing at ESC 2018, including to perform a song with Brazilian music legend Caetano Veloso - and announcing plans to tour again soon. Now the charismatic singer is coming to Germany and Switzerland in April / May 2019 together with his jazz trio (Piano: Júlio Resende / Bass: André Rosinha / Drums: Bruno Pedroso).
