Samy Deluxe - German rap pioneer and revolutionary
What would German rap be without Samy Deluxe? His distinctive voice burned itself into the memory of a youth that the rapper himself describes as lost. On the song "Weck Mich Auf", which was released after his debut Hab' gehört, he doesn't mince words. He addresses exactly what society closes its eyes to. Germany is a Babylon, a place of oppression and corruption in Western society, shaken by the capitalism of a meritocracy that overlooks itself. With this, Samy Deluxe also positions his roots in the Rastafarian movement.
From the Eimsbusch Basement to the big stages of Germany
The Hamburg native grows up in Eimsbüttel without his biological father. This topic can be found in his songs as well. He also raps about his son Elijah Malik Russel, from whose mother Brooke Russel he is divorced in the meantime. Jan Eißfeldt of the Absolute Beginners brought him to the label Eimsbush and Samy Deluxe released a demo tape with DJ Dynamite and Tropf. When DJ Dynamite leaves the trio, Tropf and Samy decide to publish their tracks in the future under the name Samy Deluxe.
The rapper actively campaigns against right-wing radicalism, racism and AIDS. Among other things, he made commercials in this regard and released albums such as Lightkultur and Am I My Brother's Keeper with various other artists to deliberately denounce grievances. His album SchwarzWeiss reached number one in the album charts in August 2011. In 2014, Samy Deluxe released his next full-length titled Männlich, on which his son produced the beats. The EP Perlen vor die Säue (Pearls before swine) shortened the waiting time for the fan community of Samsemilia until then. In 2015, the album Blockbasta followed together with Afrob under the name ASD.
Authentic and gentle - The SaMTV Unplugged Tour 2019
Currently, Samy has fulfilled a long-awaited dream with his 2018 SaMTV Unplugged album. He was actively supported in the production of important artist colleagues such as Nena, Xavier Naidoo, Jan Delay, Max Herre, Curse or Kool Savas. Absolutely authentic and accompanied by violins as well as other acoustic instruments, the musicians resurrect old and new songs in a sweeping unplugged atmosphere. At the heart of the 34 tracks are - as usual from Deluxe - important social issues such as racism or capitalism.
