In September 2017, Christian Thielemann begins his sixth season as head of the Dresden Staatskapelle. With the traditional Saxon orchestra, whose history dates back to 1548, the conductor has continued the orchestra's success story as one of the most important in Europe and has already presented a large number of celebrated concerts and recordings - including a Brahms cycle that powerfully demonstrates Thielemann's penchant for the Romantic repertoire. It is, Thielemann says of his Staatskapelle, "still like a miracle bag: where you reach in, there's gold." For the season opener, the Dresdeners accepted the invitation to the Alte Oper and put on an opening concert that harkens back to the best orchestral traditions: For Brahms, whose second symphony is on the program, is one of those central musical personalities who once shaped the orchestra. In recognition of his work, to which it owes so much, the Staatskapelle made Brahms an honorary member of its "Tonkünstler-Verein" in 1884.
