The so-called Science Slams prove that scientific topics that are considered dry as dust can not only be presented in an understandable and exciting way, but even in a funny way. In 2006, Alex Dreppec from Darmstadt had the idea of organising a tournament with short scientific presentations along the lines of poetry slams. Science slams are now held in more than 30 cities across Germany, and the spark has also spread to Indonesia, Chile, South Africa, and the United States.
Thanks to the support of Merck, science slams have been held regularly at Darmstadt's Centralstation since 2011. Each participant has ten minutes to win the favor of the audience! After all, it is the audience that decides who emerges as the winner of the "battle" at the end.
In September, Munich-based slammer MDW presents artificial photosynthesis and ponders whether it could solve our energy problems. Frankfurt slammer Daniel Lambach slams about: "Fences in the Sea - or: Why Saving the Ocean is so Difficult"
The Science Slam will be moderated by Alex Dreppec and Axel Röthemeyer.
