There are not so many opportunities for young pianists to stand out from that enormously strong competition currently storming the international concert podiums. One of the most spectacular: standing in for the ailing Lang Lang, and in the process making his debut, quasi en passant, with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle. This is what happened in Berlin when the South Korean Seong-Jin Cho took Lang Lang's place as soloist in Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major in November 2017. This was followed just two days later - with the same orchestra and programme - by his debut at the Alte Oper. The evening remained in everyone's memory - not least thanks to the subtle playing of the young Korean - and provided a very good reason to invite Seong-Jin Cho to Frankfurt for a recital, but now admittedly with more advance notice!
This time, the pianist brings with him, among other things, music by Chopin, a composer with whom he laid an important foundation for his career in 2015: at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, he won first prize - the first Korean ever to win this important competition for himself and to thrill the jury.
