Siddhartha is a Brahmin, a mendicant monk, a merchant and a dice player - he is a man on a quest. Inquisitive, understanding, humble, such is the young Brahmin. He breaks away from his family relationships to follow the path of asceticism. But even his encounter with the Buddha Gotama leaves him dissatisfied. Siddhartha finally gives himself over to a hedonistic life without being able to find fulfilment in it. Only late does he understand what happiness means to him. Simple and clear, Hesse's story has shone to us as if from another world since it was first published in 1922. But Siddhartha's search for his self is more than a commitment to Eastern philosophy, more than a rejection of the Western, materialistic world. Siddhartha's "heroic journey to enlightenment" aims to overcome all constraints. What do we really mean by freedom?
<"Siddhartha"comes to the Kammerspiele stage in a slim adaptation by director Lisa Nielebock. Her production tells the story focused on the ensemble, in extreme reduction - very present and emotionally dense. Lisa Nielebock (*1978 in Tübingen) was in-house director at the Schauspielhaus Bochum, where she worked on productions including "Penthesilea", "Macbeth", "Hiob" and "The Oresteia". Since 2014, she has been a professor of acting direction at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Bochum. This is her first time directing at Schauspiel Frankfurt.
