The Simple Minds have recorded a new record. Yes, in this case you actually have to say record, because singer Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill remembered old times and a format that doesn't seem anachronistic at all in the electronic downloading and streaming age. "Walk Between Worlds" came out with eight songs and a running time of 42 minutes. Quasi two vinyl sides with four songs each. The whole album would fit on one side of a 90's cassette and once again celebrates long forgotten times. Part one recalls the formative post-punk era with its glassy guitar sound and new-wave groove, while the B-side is much more wide-ranging, with elaborate and orchestral arrangements recorded by the Scots at London's famed Abbey Road studios. With producers Andy Wright and Gavin Goldberg, who were also responsible for the hit album "Big Star", Simple Minds have recorded an album that encapsulates and continues the soon to be 40 year spanning career of one of Britain's biggest and most successful bands. They quote themselves tongue-in-cheek musically and dig back into their history in terms of content, as in "Barrowland Star," a track about the Glasgow ballroom where Simple Minds played some memorable gigs. That "Walk Between Worlds" doesn't sound backward-looking despite these reminiscences is thanks to the record's lineup, which consists of the musicians who were also onstage for the acclaimed Acoustic Tour. With fantastic drummer Cherisse Osei, backup singers Catherine AD and Sarah Brown, multi-instrumentalist Gordy Goudie and bassist Ged Grimes, Kerr says the band "sounds more like it was inspired by Sly & The Family Stone than a traditional male rock band." In this lineup, Simple Minds will also be heading back out on a festival tour next summer. The performances will be split in two like the new record: First, "Walk Between Worlds" will be performed in its entirety, followed by another very classic set, albeit with fresh arrangements of all the band's big hits adapted to the band.
