"I haven't seen a single slave in Qatar." With this quote Franz Beckenbauer summed up the attitude of many people in the West. After all, after more than 200 years of fighting slavery, it is now banned by law in every country in the world. And yet it is everywhere. Slavery has become a central component of global economies, providing us here in the West with an exuberant variety of products and services: Clothing, cosmetics, electronics, food, elder care, world cup soccer . We all consume these products every day, although we are well aware of the production conditions and exploitation strategies behind them. Or should be. Konstantin Küspert has written a kaleidoscope of different perspectives, in which he analyses and deciphers the mechanisms of selective perception of our Western standard of living - as well as the other side of Western modernity, namely the close historical connection of European colonialism, mass slavery, empires and capitalism.
