A good four years ago Sleater-Kinney caused a medium sensation with their reunion and with the album "No Cities to Love" made sure that the riot grrrl movement got new fodder. Now, vocalists/guitarists Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein and drummer Janet Weiss have confirmed that they are working on a new album titled "The Center Won't Hold" and that none other than St. Vincent is producing the record. "Hurry On Home," the first taste, was released in late May. A vibrato chorus vocal, a sharp riff, a hard beat, and the old feeling is back. Sleater-Kinney, once called "America's best rock band" by Greil Marcus, have always been explicitly progressive and political. On the new work, that's supposed to be the explicit focus. On the last record, the world was still fine, then came Trump, the Brexit and all the social upheavals. The trio reacts to this in their own way: "We're always mixing the personal and the political, but on this record, despite obviously thinking so much about politics, we were really thinking about the person - ourselves or versions of ourselves or iterations of depression or loneliness - in the middle of the chaos." Their songs help them do that. The musical affinity between the guitarists Tucker and Brownstein, who can set entire houses on fire with their instruments, and the machine Weiss on the drums, who tips a can of gasoline into the fire, stand for unique uncompromisingness. Especially at their gigs, Sleater-Kinney, it's always been like this, only goes one way: not half-heartedly and on the side, but only fully and completely, with bloody fingers and protruding carotid artery. In February, Sleater-Kinney will come to Germany with their new record for two shows.
