On white canvas, five thin orphans from Bariga, a poor district of the Nigerian mega-metropolis Lagos, meet a fat white man. Childish innocence meets the dreaded stranger complete with chocolate. African lack of opportunity meets the stereotype of European guilt, contemporary Nigerian dance meets European concept theatre. This cannot go well, one suspects, and finds oneself in the middle of an absurdly funny horror film complete with vampires. And who is sucking who dry here? The German performance group Monster Truck together with the Nigerian choreographer Segun Adefila and his company The Footprints of David spare no cliché and venture into the shallows of postcolonial art discourse. They cite images that everyone knows and entangle the viewer qua mere presence in irresolvable conflicts. Is there an escape from the postcolonial question of guilt? Or is an encounter at eye level in the shadow of asymmetrical power relations doomed to failure from the start? An abysmal entanglement in which laughter and payment are allowed.
