"Once upon a time, a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away." For decades, the greatest science fiction saga in film history has delighted millions of fans of all generations worldwide, in no small part due to the soundtrack composed by John Williams. Almost everyone can probably hum along to the theme tune, so it's no surprise that the soundtrack is demonstrably one of the most successful in cinema history. Now the first part of the original trilogy, Star Wars: A New Hope, becomes an unforgettable concert experience. Conducted by Christian Schumann, the Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the Oscar®, Golden Globe and Grammy award-winning music while simultaneously showing the entire film on a big screen. In Star Wars: A New Hope, nineteen years after the creation of the Empire, Luke Skywalker becomes embroiled in the Rebel Alliance struggle when he encounters Obi-Wan Kenobi, who had been living secluded on the desert planet of Tatooine for years. Obi-Wan begins Luke's Jedi training, and he accompanies him on a daring mission to rescue the enchanting Rebel leader Princess Leia from the clutches of the Empire. Even as Obi-Wan sacrifices himself in a lightsaber duel against Darth Vader, his former apprentice Luke proves he is one with the Force as he is able to destroy the Empire's dreaded Death Star. Since the release of the first installment nearly 40 years ago, the Star Wars saga, masterminded by George Lucas down to the last detail, has revolutionized the Hollywood movie landscape and has lost none of its charm to this day. With its mythic story, compelling characters, groundbreaking special effects, and world-famous Film score by John Williams, the Star Wars saga has become a true icon of American culture. In addition to his film scores, Williams is a renowned conductor and respected composer of concertante works. This can be seen in individual themes of the Star Wars soundtrack, among others, as Williams drew inspiration for some motifs and compositional techniques from none other than Richard Wagner and his musical idiom. So, in addition to the use of leitmotif technique, the clearest Wagnerian reference is found in Luke Skywalker's heroic theme: here one recognizes Siegfried's horn call with its youthfully heroic rising fifth, which immediately captivates the listener emotionally.
