The singer Nawal Mlanao, born on the Comoros in the Indian Ocean, comes from a famous musical family in which music and spirituality belong closely together. She was brought up according to the rules of a brotherhood of the archipelago and, contrary to Comorian traditions, was the first woman of the island state to perform publicly with her own compositions and traditional songs in the trance tradition of the Sufis in the Islamic-Arabic region. She has now been the internationally recognized voice of Comorian women for over 25 years.
The Afrika Mamas was founded in 1998 by Ntombifuthi Lushaba. All the singers in the six-member a cappella ensemble belong to the Zulu people, the largest ethnic group in South Africa. The singers of the Afrika Mamas are single mothers with a total of eleven children. In their songs, they address their social experiences as women, their daily joys and sorrows, and their observations in a world strongly dominated by men. In particular, they advocate for equal rights for women and the opportunity to work as women with children. In spring 2019, the "Africa Mamas" were nominated in the "Best Group" category for the "Songlines Awards 2019".
