Subsignal was founded in 2007 by Sieges Even members Arno Menses (Vocals) and Markus Steffen (Guitars), initially as a project. The first result of this collaboration was the song 'A Wallflower On The Day Of Saint Juliana', which was released under the title 'Eyes Wide Open' on the 2007 Sieges Even release 'Paramount'. After Arno Menses and Markus Steffen left Sieges Even in summer 2008, both were looking for suitable musicians to make Subsignal a real band. Ralf Schwager, who is also known for his work with the German prog band Dreamscape, took over the bass. The line-up was completed with Dutch drummer Roel van Helden and keyboardist David Bertok, who also worked for Dreamscape. Drummer van Helden left the band in winter 2012 and was replaced by Danilo Batdorf (ex-Dreamscape). Subsignal see themselves as a progressive rock band, open to a wide variety of influences and styles (such as AOR, metal, etc.). They describe their music as melancholic, innovative, emotional and melodic. Arno and Markus want to continue with the new band where Sieges Even left off, but with more musical openness and stronger stage presence. Right after the winter tour, recording began on the fifth studio album, titled 'La Muerta'. For this release, Subsignal signed a new record deal with Gentle Art of Music (including RPWL, Panzerballett, etc.). 'La Muerta' was produced by Yogi Lang and Kalle Wallner, both known for their band RPWL. The album contains 11 song with a total playing time of about 55 minutes. Unlike the previous album 'The Beacons of Somewhere Sometime', there are no conceptual connections or themes on 'La Muerta'. 'La Muerta' represents a distinct counterpoint to the 2015 album. "We try never to write an album twice - that's not possible anyway, and certainly not desired. Rather, we've tried to pare ourselves down a bit again, along the lines of less is often more. I think that 'La Muerta' has become more transparent, rockier, maybe even poppier in every respect. This is also audible on a production level. Kalle and Yogi have brought us a big step forward again with their experience and input here.", says guitarist Markus Steffen. Besides two shorter instrumental tracks, 'La Muerta' also contains a very calm and emotional piece entitled 'Some Kind of Drowning' that is mainly carried by a piano. Moreover, this song features Russian singer Marjana Semkina as a duo partner of Arno Menses. Semkina is known for her band Lamthemorning, who won the Progressive Music Award for Best Album in 2016. 'La Muerta' will be released worldwide on May 25, 2018 via Gentle Art of Music/Soulfood on CD, vinyl, download and stream.
