Volker Bertelmann began working with a prepared piano under the name Hauschka without having heard of John Cage. Since 2005, the Düsseldorf pianist has been exploring the sound spaces that open up under the influence of ping-pong balls, beer mats, cans and erasers when placed between hammer and string. Odds and ends, foreign objects, found objects, whatever you want to call them. Metal, paper, wood, rubber, felt - with the materials of our world, Bertelmann creates a universe that leans far beyond the sounds connoted with his instrument.
