Cooper and his friend Aylott live in a nursing home. While Cooper faces his physical decrepitude with sarcastic wit, the sensitive Aylott observes the various manifestations of old age with anxious amazement. They pass the time with games of chess, little flirtations with the pretty nurse Wilson, and arguments with the resolute cleaner Mrs. Baker, who confronts old age with a healthy sense of reality. On the first Sunday of every month, Cooper's daughter Julia shows up with her husband for a dutiful courtesy call, during which they both just as dutifully demonstrate their dismay at life in the nursing home. Everything seems the same, yet something changes.
This sounds like social drama, gray panthers, long-term care insurance, useless old people. It doesn't. Rarely is there such a hearty laugh, are original hilarity and natural melancholy so unspoiled close together in a play about this topic.
