Self-determination and human freedom are the goals Ludwig van Beethoven professes in his "Eroica". That is why the Musikfest is dedicating an extensive concert evening to the idea of freedom: In three concerts and a conversation, we give the floor to composers and performers who have made their art a political commitment and who stand up for peace and freedom.
In 1943, in the midst of war and under the impact of the German occupation, the man of letters and resistance fighter Paul Éluard wrote his harrowing poetry, appealing in it to humanity. Francis Poulenc wanted to work solely with the means of the human voice when he set his friend's haunting verses to music in 1945: in "Figure humaine" Poulenc found an unsparing and direct musical language. The SWR Vokalensemble will let its programme, which is dedicated to humanity and humanity, converge on this impressive choral work. It gives a touching prelude to a music festival day that focuses on resistance against terror and oppression.
