Erik Satie's music as contemporary chamber jazz? Harpsichordist and pianist Tamar Halperin, known for her borderline performances and her collaboration with jazz pianist Michael Wollny, has made a subjective selection of 18 pieces from the French composer's extensive oeuvre and brushed them against the grain.
The result is an exciting 2016 album, recorded with a variety of instruments - piano, harpsichord, glockenspiel, Hammond organ or Wurlitzer - and careful use of electronics. In the live version, Halperin plays music by Debussy, John Cage, and Chick Corea, all of whom were heavily influenced by Satie, in addition to Satie.
Electronically supported by Guy Sternberg, she weaves the works together into a meditative journey that includes improvised passages.
