According to a story by Tania Blixen in the version by Fabian Schwarz The cook Babette flees from France to Norway. She was involved in the Paris Commune uprising in 1871 and finds asylum in a small village in northern Norway. The Puritan Lutheran community is held together by faith, love and renunciation. The daughters of the village's deceased provost take her in and give her a job as a cook. After a surprise lottery win, Babette asks the sisters to cook for the provost's anniversary. French high culture collides with the haggard villagers. Without understanding the art of cooking, the sensuality of the feast breaks the dam of bitterness and asceticism that has long separated the individuals. An inexplicable magic unites the quarreling villagers for one evening. Before her escape, Babette had been a chef in one of Paris's fanciest restaurants. Flight and asylum, art and its effects, the foreign as a gift - and much love are in this story. Text source and more information about this event: http://www.comoedia-mundi.de
