The Tango Musical Direct from Buenos Aires
In summer 2017, the tango masterpiece Tanguera is finally back in Europe. With its award-winning choreographies and the perfection of the more than 20-strong dance ensemble, the emotional tango firework has been euphorically celebrated by its audiences from Tokyo to Berlin, Vienna and London to New York and Paris since 2002. Under the patronage of Maestro Daniel Barenboim, the world's first tango musical returns to Europe for selected guest performances. With its dramatic story of passion, desire, pain and eroticism, it will once again captivate audiences in Munich, Frankfurt, London and Cologne.
Tanguera takes us to early 20th-century Buenos Aires and its notorious port district of La Boca. It tells of the fateful ordeal of the beautiful immigrant Giselle, from her arrival at the port to her work in one of the city's myriad brothels to her success as a dancer in the glittering world of the cabaret. Seduced by the criminal Gaudencio and loved by the brave dockworker Lorenzo, her story unfolds in the tense language of tango. In the nightclubs of Buenos Aires, as a prostitute and celebrated "tanguera" - seducing men with the power of her dance alone - the young woman falls into a fateful spiral of love and passion, enmity and rivalry.
But Tanguera tells not only the story of Giselle, but also that of the tango itself. In his consistent storytelling, which relies entirely on the tango, scene after scene reveals his journey through the social classes. Once originating in the immigrant quarters and brothels of South America, this dance has long enjoyed unbroken popularity in all parts of the world. Its history continues to this day, culminating with the inclusion of the tango on UNESCO's Intangible World Heritage List in 2009
