Tartuffe is a fraud. Orgon's family agrees on that.
Only the master of the house refuses to believe it.
He has fallen for him, gives him unqualified trust. Blinded by infatuation, Orgon eats out of the liar's hand, stubbornly throwing all warnings to the wind. Tartuffe, the hypocrite, has taken up residence with him, living under his roof at his expense. He is the intruder who bursts the family's bubble of prosperity.
For he wants Orgon's wife Elmire above all. The latter wants to cajole Tartuffe into revealing his true self before Orgon's eyes. Only when Orgon himself witnesses the attempts of seduction, he wants to chase the false friend out of the house. But by then, in a rage against the family, he has already bequeathed him his house and farm and promised his daughter's hand in marriage. Molières bitterly wicked comedy exposes the selfish motives of affluent society and shows where belief in simple truths and supposed authority can lead.
