Formed in 1980 in Edinburgh, Scotland, The Exploited came about as a response to the ever-present "No Future" attitude of the time and rather than just being unemployed, these four contemporaries decided to kick ass and if they didn't have a real job, at least they had style! Ex-soldier Wattie Buchan (vocals), Big John Duncan (guitar), Dru Stix (drums) and Gary McCormack (bass) got together and under the banner The Exploited they were raw and raucous from the start and didn't let their music be distorted for mainstream consumption. THE EXPLOITED were punk rock. In the very first year of their fledgling band's history, THE EXPLOITED released their debut "Punk's Not Dead" on the Secret label in 1981, which was more of an inciting rallying cry than a simple album. The album title became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts, landing at #1 as Independent Record of the Year (long before most indies were just well-disguised majors), reaching #20 on the national charts, and selling 150,000 copies. While "Punk's Not Dead" certainly isn't the best creation of all time, it was unbeatable as an opening act and the band was simply incredible live. The long hot summer of '81 brought anarchy to the UK as city after city, venue after venue literally exploded! The perfect time for THE EXPLOITED to join fellow punk band DISCHARGE as co-headliners on the legendary "Apocalypse Now" tour. The sold out London show (at the Lyceum Ballroom) took place just one day after the Brixton riots. In October, THE EXPLOITED entered the charts with the brutally evocative 'Dead Cities', and subsequently completed the heaviest Top Of The Pops performance ever, causing countless complaints and touring the UK once again.
