Despite strict Corona requirements, play operations continue at the Fritz Rémond Theater at the Zoo. It is still not possible to reach full capacity. This is economically a disaster for theaters, but for those involved on and behind the stage, as well as for the audience, it is incredibly nice to be able to play or experience theater again. Until February 27, the play "The Game of Love and Chance" by Pierre Carlet de Marivaux is on the program at the Fritz Rémond Theater. Carolin Freund, Katarina Schmidt, Pascal Simon Grote, Thomas Jansen, Marko Pustisek and Thomas Zimmer can be seen on stage. And that's what the comedy is about:

Silvia resists marriage. Because a man with good character is hard to find. Men have two faces, with the amiable mien often proving to be a mere mask. When Silvia's father arranges a meeting with Dorante, to whom she is to be married, she devises a ruse: in order to be able to test the inner nature of her future husband at her leisure, she swaps roles with her maid Lisette. This is to show whether emotion is capable of overcoming reason. Will Dorante fall in love with Silvia despite the difference in status? Dorante, however, has the same idea, he comes in the disguise of his servant Arlequin, who in turn introduces himself to the supposed Silvia as Monsieur Dorante.

The fake Dorante, who acts boorish and narrow-minded, quickly falls out of favor with Silvia, whereas she quite likes his servant. The real Dorante also immediately has an eye for the bright maid, whereas the false Silvia leaves him completely cold. The fake Dorante and the fake Silvia, on the other hand, fall in love with each other right away. At the command of their masters, they must therefore play a double game: They pretend to be what they are not, and not to have feelings that they have. Is love controlled by consubstantiality or is it a product of chance?

A good seventy years before Goethe's Elective Affinities, Pierre Carlet de Marivaux explores the hidden laws of the passions in his most successful play, transforming the stage into a laboratory with a chemical test set-up: do two elements enter into a bond with their natural partner even if they do not recognize him as such?
