The Great Chinese New Year Concert is one of the most successful unconventional concert formats worldwide. Each year, a traditional Chinese orchestra presents a sampling of the rich domestic musical tradition in renowned concert halls, each time during the period of the Chinese Spring Festival. 2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the Great Chinese New Year Concert and welcomes the "Year of the Rooster".
Year after year, a traditional orchestra from different Chinese regions is selected by a panel of experts to perform the highlights of their local music-making in the West. As the orchestra changes each year, audiences are given the opportunity to explore the diverse ethnic musical styles China has to offer. From the sounds of the horse-head fiddle from Inner Mongolia to the Cantonese melodies of the Gaohu, listeners will be taken on an awe-inspiring musical journey through the Chinese lands.
To help Western audiences develop an understanding of Chinese music, a moderator will guide them through the concert program, which will include introductions to solo instruments such as the erhu and pipa, as well as explanations of the background of orchestral pieces and the meaning of the lyrics of vocal interludes.
The Great Chinese New Year Concert was conceived to enrich the cultural exchange between East and West and bring traditional Chinese music, which has a history of over 3,000 years, to stages around the world.
