Once the Barinkay family fled the Turkish conquerors, leaving their Hungarian estates behind. Now, after an amnesty, young Sandor Barinkay returns to claim his inheritance. But all he finds is a dilapidated ruin. The land has long since been taken over by the pig farmer Zsupan. When Barinkay asks his daughter Arsena for her hand in marriage, she haughtily rejects him.
In the Gypsy camp, on the other hand, he is gleefully welcomed as the "Gypsy Baron" after the Gypsy woman Czipra recognizes him as the son of the former landowner. Barinkay falls in love with her foster daughter Saffi, but soon learns that she is of blue-blood origin. He does not consider himself worthy of her and goes to war to forget about her. After the battle is won, they all meet again in Vienna. Thanks to his courage, Barinkay becomes a real baron and a great love comes into her own after all .
