The Lake Poets have the whole world in mind, which is not to say that they are not also deeply rooted in an interpersonal sense of belonging and want to emotionally engage with the people around them. The loose collective, led by (extraordinarily) talented singer-guitarist Marty Longstaff, recorded their self-titled debut album in just three days in Nashville. That Longstaff recorded enough songs in that short time to seriously consider releasing it as a double album is a testament to his dedicated work ethic. The eleven songs that ultimately made it onto the album are of such stripped back beauty that Longstaff could in the future be mentioned in the same breath as John Martyn and Richard Thompson. That's how well he knows how to match his guitar playing to the very stripped down songs, leaving the necessary space for his clear-shimmering voice. Although the album was made at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, where countless American music legends have recorded, the Sunderland-born Longstaff's voice is distinctly reminiscent of the North East English sounds of Paddy McAloon and Martin Stepehnson & The Daintees.
