"The last five years" is a chamber musical with music and lyrics by Robert Jason Brown.
The musical tells the story of the relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, an aspiring writer, and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress, who meet in New York, marry, and then part after five years. Cathy and Jamie take turns looking back at their personal love story, letting the audience in on their first date, their wedding, and the initial problems and misunderstandings that eventually lead to their sad breakup after five years together.
The action is carried through fourteen songs.
Brown chooses a very delightful narrative style:
Cathy tells the story starting with their breakup and then moving backward in time to their first date, while Jamie starts at the beginning of the story and moves chronologically toward the end of their marriage. Both storylines meet only once, at their wedding.
Hannah Grover, star of English Theatre's production of "Ghost-The Musical" will play the role of Cathy.
