Does democracy belong in a museum? For 65 years, the historic Deutschhaus in Mainz served as the parliament building for the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament, but now it needs to be renovated. The members of parliament have found a new home for their plenary sessions during this transitional phase: the Stone Hall of the Mainz State Museum. A parliament in a museum - you couldn't invent it better.
Björn Bicker, award-winning author of the play Deportation Cast, also performed at the Staatstheater Mainz, took this as an opportunity to talk to the MPs and the people who work around them about the state of democracy, its future and visions. Drawing on his experiences in the Mainz parliament, he is writing a play for the State Theatre. What more fitting venue could there be for the performance than the place where the people who have chosen to work on our parliamentary democracy meet? Especially considering that Mainz was the site of the first attempt at democracy on German soil at the time of the French Revolution.
