Jessica James and her brother Frank witness their family's land and property being expropriated after the end of the Civil War and are forced to make up for this injustice with a spectacular bank robbery. They form a gang with four wanted criminals and rob the Bank of Liberty. Spurred on by success and popular support, robberies of trains and stagecoaches follow, always intent on harming the rich and sparing the poor. The law in the form of Pinkerton pursues the gang and gets hold of them in Northfield, Minnesota in 1874.
