Richard Wagner (1813 - 1883)
Opera in three acts
Libretto by the composer First performed in Munich
In German. With supertitles.
Tradition or change, young or old, rules and laws or chaos and anarchy, self-interest or common good, national or global - a balancing act that shapes a society for better or worse. The »Meistersinger«-world features an artist's drama and a love story as driving forces, and ultimately the people as the tipping point. The line that separates the comic from the tragic here is a fine one. Wagner's magic word is poetry. A master like Hans Sachs must come along, endowed with wisdom, humanity, courage and cunning, insight and renunciation, to avert chaos in Nuremberg and point the way to a future - the wish for a utopia in C major.
