Madame Flora stages Séances, which she makes pay well. Her daydreaming daughter Monica and the mute orphan boy Toby, for whom Monica has affectionate feelings, help her. Flora's clients are firmly convinced that through her they can contact deceased relatives. She herself thinks little of the supernatural — until the day when a cold hand seems to wrap itself around her neck out of nowhere. The unsettled Flora blames Toby, and disaster takes its course.
The Medium was Gian Carlo Menotti's international breakthrough. In New York alone, the work was performed some 200 times in 1947. Menotti himself also directed a film adaptation.
