Most people use the night for sleeping. But what happens when we suspend sleep and wake through the night? Our world then appears in a different light. Whether in the glimmer of the moon and the stars, in the glistening white of fluorescent tubes or in the semi-darkness of a club: at night, spaces open up to us in which sleep is unthinkable. From a wide variety of perspectives, the interdisciplinary exhibition "THE NIGHT. Everything but Sleep" sheds light on our behaviour and communication at night. Visitors experience the most diverse facets of the "other half of the day": from the first star charts and the search for meaning in the nocturnal sky, to strategies for controlling our feelings of the night, to the harnessing of the night as additional working or living time. Around 350 objects from mythology, astronomy, art, pop culture, the history of technology and contemporary phenomena show how we communicate in and with the night. Walking through the night, guests in the Bestiary encounter the terrors of the night, interactively push the nocturnal thought carousel and work through a night. They delve into the history of nightlife, swap scented flirt cards and leave behind virtual graffiti. In the end, they find themselves in the sleepless world of modernity and the present - in the twilight of pleasure and work, boundlessness and loss of control, freedom and compulsion. The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive programme of guided tours and workshops, as well as an interactive exhibition track for children.
