Shortly before Christmas, eight people who couldn't be more different are trapped in a private psychological clinic because of a snowstorm while they are shocked to discover that they are not alone. The wanted "soul breaker",who already has three women on his conscience, is locked up with them. He breaks his victims psychologically; they are prisoners in their own bodies, unable to communicate with others or perceive the outside world. The clinic director Prof. Dr. Samuel Raßfeld and the psychiatrist Dr. Sophia Dorn had actually only counted on the patient Greta Kaminsky, who admits herself to the clinic every year because as a widow she doesn't want to be alone at Christmas. But there's also the patient Caspar, who was admitted to the clinic a few days earlier due to memory loss and who arouses suspicion, especially in the paramedic Tom Schadeck, who brings the patient Dr. Jonathan Bruck to the clinic. The quiet shift that nurse Yasmin Schiller and caretaker Dirk Bachmann had been looking forward to seems to come to nothing. Because for all of them, locked up in a confined space, it is now a matter of escaping the soulbreaker. It begins a fight for survival, in which no one trusts the other.
"Der Seelenbrecher" is the fourth bestseller, published in 2008, by German author Sebastian Fitzek. He is considered the new author in the genre of psychological thrillers in Germany, but is also gaining attention in the American and English markets, something few German authors have managed to do with their thrillers. In 2016/2017 he was awarded the European Prize for Crime Literature and his works have already been translated into 24 languages.
