The Tiger Lillies are THE cult band from the niche worlds of Dark Cabaret, Vaudeville & Circus influenced Variety Music, Moritaten, Gypsy Chanson, the term "Brechtian Punk Cabaret" goes back to them. For 30 years now they have been making pubs, squats, dives, parties, later concert halls and theatres unsafe. As the theme of their anniversary album "Devil's Fairground", they ideally chose to come to terms with the past of a phase that fits very well with the band's style: In the early 90s, they spent several months cavorting in Prague and the Czech Republic. It was a heady time of upheaval. Shortly after the fall of the communist East, the mood was one of new beginnings as well as confusion, euphoria as well as insecurity. And above all, there was an eagerness to experiment that went hand in hand with new freedoms. Prague was the centre, a flourishing and glowing city in transition between the former East and the dawning West, intellectual scepticism and utopian hopes. The songs are about this dissolute attitude to life, wild concerts in small bars, cold flophouses, lots of love and romance, but of course also drugs and personal destruction. A place made for the Tiger Lillies.
