It's the story of Paula Spencer, for whom at 39 years old, most of her life has gone well. And it hasn't gone well. Between jaded teachers and meddlesome bench neighbors, she trains in dirty thinking and hardened manners.
Then she starts a family with her childhood sweetheart, Charlo. And on and off she sits in the hospital explaining her injuries by saying she walked into a door. Now Charlo is dead and Paula begins to speak.
Paula Spencer is an alcoholic woman who takes control of her life despite all the adversity and humiliation.
A furious monologue about a disappointed love and the tireless attempt to take control of life through her own efforts.
