From the science fiction novel "Dune" by Frank Herbert, The Wooden Sky borrowed the name of their new album, as well as the title track. Singer and creative hub Gavin Gardiner has thus used a fantasy novel to describe earthly, very real problems that younger generations in particular are currently facing. Yet the album's title suggests that all is not lost: we survive because we swim:
"More now than ever, I feel the weight of responsibility to act and make things better for the people to come," Gardiner says. "Maybe that sounds cliche, but it feels very real now. As an artist, you have your voice, and not much else. So you gotta use it."
The Canadians' fifth album falls musically between Fleetwood Mac, Tame Impala and The War on Drugs. Sometimes psychedelics shimmer through, sometimes flawless folk, sometimes bluesy soundscapes. Thus it is a little less rock'n'roll than its predecessor. Between reduced ballads with string carpet like "You Are Not Alone" or "Glory Hallelujah" the focus musically is nevertheless on distorted electric guitars.
