Open dress rehearsal. An extremely exciting crime play is to be shown. The auditorium is filled to bursting. But the replacement actor, who is supposed to stand in for an actor who fell ill at short notice, has not yet shown up. To make matters worse, no one knows what he looks like, but he is supposed to be perfect in his role.
When the audience member Schmidt, who arrives too late, is mistaken for this unknown colleague and is unceremoniously pushed onto the stage, he thinks he is in a participatory theatre. The chaos takes its course... Cues remain ineffective and the plot gets crazier and crazier. But Schmidt, a layman trained in television, develops more and more into a crime specialist and makes his supposed colleagues look pretty old. When then also real cognac is served with the consequence that double murder, private jealousy scenes and derailments mix on stage, there is no holding back and the theater audience breaks out in bright enthusiasm, because finally there is one "of them" on the stage, which means the boards of this world.
