Therapy? was founded in 1989 by Andy Cairns (vocals, guitar) and Fyfe Ewing (drums) in Northern Ireland. That same year the band recorded their first demo and Michael McKeegan (electric bass), former school friend of Fyfe Ewing, joined the band. In 1990 the band toured the UK for the first time and released their first single with a run of 1,000 copies. Alongside this, recording began for their first album Babyteeth, which was released in July 1991. In 1992, the band released the album Pleasure Death, which charted in the British indie charts. A major European tour and a record deal with A&M Records followed. At the end of the year Therapy? released the album Nurse with the single Teethgrinder. In 1993, the band landed at number nine in the UK charts with Screamager, i.e. the accompanying EP Shortsharpshock, accompanied by a sold-out tour and an appearance on Top of the Pops. After a two-month US tour supporting the bands Helmet and The Jesus Lizard, they began preparing their next album, Troublegum, in Northern Ireland with their producer Chris Sheldon, which was a huge success in 1994, winning a number of music awards. 1995 saw the release of Infernal Love, the band's fifth studio album, by which time they were touring successfully outside Europe. In 1996, drummer Fyfe Ewing left the band and was replaced two months later by Graham Hopkins (drums) and Martin McCarrick (guitar, cello). That same year, the now four-piece band played as Ozzy Osbourne's opening act in America. After a quiet 1997, the band released their next album Semi-Detached in Europe in 1998. While still on the accompanying European tour, their record label A&M went bankrupt - the subsequently planned handover to Mercury Records fell through. Semi-Detached will not be released in the US as a result for the time being. The band has to finance the rest of the European tour out of their own pocket. After 1999 starts badly with drummer Graham Hopkins also out for three months due to an injury, the band gets a new record deal with ARK 21 Records and releases their commercially only moderately successful album Suicide Pact - You First there. 2000 saw the band release the best-of album So Much for the Ten Year Plan - A Retrospective 1990-2000 and tour Europe. The year 2001 started well at first, with Therapy? playing in the United States and the band recording their next album. After a few more concerts, the band broke up again with the record company and drummer Graham Hopkins, which is why the album Shameless was not released until later in the year. For the already planned concerts in 2002 the drummer Keith Baxter helped out, who died of liver failure on January 4, 2008. A replacement, Neil Cooper, was permanently added to the band that summer. In the fall of 2002, a new record label was found, Spitfire Records, which released Therapy's 2003 album High Anxiety. The band spent the rest of the year playing gigs and in the recording studio. 2004 saw a split with Martin McCarrick. In September of that year, the band released their tenth album, Never Apologise Never Explain. The eleventh album, One Cure Fits All, was released in late April 2006. In December 2007, Therapy? signed a worldwide deal with British hard rock label Demolition Records and shortly thereafter began work on their twelfth album, Crooked Timber, which was released on March 20, 2009.
