Sono - Backyard Opera Summer 2001 - Just before the day that changed the world, three guys from Hamburg romped around the #1 spot on the American Billboard Dance Charts for six weeks: Sono with their uber-club hit Keep Control, which even made it to #1 on the End of Year Dance Charts of America's most famous music magazine that very year. Many names on that hit list (Kim English, David Morales) you'd look in vain for in a club context these days, but others remain hugely influential in electronic music, such as the Chemical Brothers or New Order.
Fifteen years after the initial release of Keep Control, Sono are also a fixture on the scene. The three-piece band, consisting of Lennart A. Salomon, Florian Sikorski and Martin Weiland, has always remained true to themselves. This fidelity to themselves is surely the secret of their long existence: being open to new musical trends while still possessing a distinctive writing and production style of their own.
Backyard Opera is Sono's fifth album, her second release on Kontor Records, and it represents a certain distance from her previous, very club-oriented albums. You still find beats that get your pulse racing (whether on the staccato thunderstorm Supersonic or the drum'N'bass-infused Cupid), but Backyard Opera showcases one thing above all: the band's strong songwriting skills - this time focusing on piano rather than guitar.
