Terra in the year 21XX. Humanity is on the edge of its existence. Two global nuclear wars have turned the earth's surface into a radioactive wasteland that can only be recultivated very slowly. The survival of the last humans is ensured solely by machines - artificial intelligences with human-like exteriors, originally constructed for space exploration and programmed to carry out any command. Equipped with sophisticated technology, they can withstand the deadly radiation for longer, but are no more safe from it in the long run than the human organism.
At first, no one suspects that the artificial species has evolved since its original programming and has long since found a way to communicate on its own - then it appears to be a new milestone in cybernetic research. But by the time the scientists realize that the robots are becoming aware of both their existence and their mortality, it is already too late.
