Tim Berne's Snakeoil "Snakeoil" is a fascinating band, a chamber orchestra with power packs, a large, dark, at times lyrical, shimmering stream of sound. The complex tracks written by New York saxophonist Tim Berne propel the musicians into labyrinthine corridors where surprises lurk at every turn, shifts, snake melodies, rhythmic dislocations, modular bass motifs whose weight increases inexorably. Composed and improvised sequences merge imperceptibly, overlap or run parallel, and the shared sound captures the listener.
Berne's angular, avant-garde alto sax contrasts with clarinetist Oscar Noriega's more lyrical duct, Matt Mitchell's concise piano playing, and percussionist Ches Smith's seemingly inexhaustible fund of percussion (drums, gongs, cymbals, and sticks).
2015 saw the release of "You've Been Watching Me", the celebrated band's third album on the renowned Munich label ECM. It features new band member Ryan Ferreira on acoustic and electric guitars for the first time.
