Have you ever wondered at a certain place how it might have looked like in the past or how it will change in the future? In 1989, musician and illustrator Richard McGuire also addressed this question in his 6-page comic strip that formed the basis for the graphic novel HERE, published in 2014. The acclaimed book is both a conceptual experiment and a crowd-pleasing work that engages readers on multiple levels. HERE has now been the inspiration for a new exhibition at the Museum Angewandte Kunst, which can be visited and experienced until 11 September. By setting up three versions of the corner of the room in which the graphic novel is set, visitors are directly involved in the exhibition's action. Here is allowed to be photographed, filmed and played with, making the museum a place of collective experience. Here by Richard McGuire: In his acclaimed graphic novel Here, American illustrator Richard McGuire breaks the unity of time, space and action with a stroke of formal genius: In the ever-same Here of an ordinary corner of a living room, he places temporal insertions into the respective Now, allowing fragments of the past to break in within a single image, fragments of the future to flash up, and thus unfolding entire human lives as if in fast motion. The exhibition ZeitRaum brings McGuire's room to life as a walk-in and playable stage space at the Museum Angewandte Kunst. Visitors of all ages can move through the life-size setting and thus become characters in the narrative themselves. In addition, ZeitRaum takes up the idea of the dissolution of the time-space continuum and asks what images and objects, what science can tell us about the significance of time for our lives. In addition, it also looks at the genesis of the graphic novel. TimeSpace is an interesting exhibition that offers a surprisingly diverse exploration of the themes from McGuire's graphic novel in a relatively small space.
