Sini Koskelainen, Johanna Kyykoski, Piia Säilyno and Venla Ilona Blom met while studying at the Royal Academy of Music in Denmark. In 2012, the four Finnish women formed the vocal ensemble Tuuletar, named after the eponymous wind goddess from local mythology. They were influenced by the rich Finnish folk traditions as well as classical music, pop, hip-hop and electronic sounds. "Vocal Folk Hop" is what the Graces call their own genre. Their debut album "Tules Maas Vedes Taivaal" translates as "In fire and earth, in water and skies". That's exactly what Tuuletar do with a vocal force of nature and a lot of temperament. "We are very different characters, but when we sing, everything falls into place as a matter of course," says Sini Koskelainen about the magic of the ensemble. "Nature delivers music to those who can listen like Tuuletar", is what the Allmusic Guide says about the debut album. Thus, one hears and discovers the earth as well as modern urban landscapes in the women's voices. The singers have mastered unusual vocal techniques such as throat singing and "kulning," the archaic calling of shepherds for their animals.
