"Figure" is a term whose meaning also stands for transformation and movement in various contexts: a shadow in the darkness, a body, a sum, a form. No wonder that the Icelandic four-piece band Vök, whose spherical electro-pop is equally synonymous with various electronic forms and executions, chose this title for their debut album. Full of distorted pulses, whispering melodies, reverberating guitars and dreamy hooks, and influenced by artists like The Weeknd and Little Dragon as well as sci-fi cinematic films, their ambitious first album encompasses a whole spectrum of sounds and feelings. "Anger, obsession, neglect, death, love, happiness and hope," lists singer Margrét, who formed VÖK with saxophonist Andri Már in snowy Reykjavík in early 2013. After winning the Icelandic young talent competition "Músíktilraunir" just a few months after their formation, instrumentalist Ólafur Alexander and drummer Einar Stef joined them. Together they produced and released their first EP "Circles" in 2015, on which they presented themselves as innovative musicians with smouldering, intelligent sounds. - Noisey described the Icelanders' music as paying homage to "The Beach soundtrack with its 1980s synth-pop tones and the modern sounds of The Knife." The EP earned them much praise, but at the same time was a very "electro and computer-based record", as the band now reflects. 2018 now sees the release of the band's second album, following "Figure", which they will be giving first glimpses of on tour in Germany from February.
