Völkerball is the name of the band - A Tribute to Rammstein is the subtitle. How big this subtitle is written is already clear before Völkerball has played the first note. The curtain falls and finally reveals the completed stage set and an overwhelming scenery. Here, over the next two hours, a production will unfold that is almost unfathomable to the eye and ear, with brilliant visual accents set by sophisticated light shows and hair-perfectly placed pyrotechnic effects.
Once the brute Rammstein sound relentlessly crashes down on the concert-goer like a hammer on an anvil and once the sonorous - actually unmistakable - Rammstein voice resounds from the throat of Völkerball frontman René Anlauff, the illusion is perfect. Völkerball spans a musical arc through the complete Rammstein discography and not only lures real Rammstein fans out of their reserve.
With the help of painstakingly recreated props, outfits and make-up, the six Völkerball musicians know how to slip into the roles of their respective "idols" so perfectly that even seasoned Rammstein fans rub their eyes in disbelief.
With seemingly absent, deadpan looks and the typical, angular and determined movements and gestures, Völkerball skillfully embodies the alien and cool charisma that makes Rammstein seem so unapproachable.
The band seems to be transported into another world, wrapped in a primal atmosphere that is reflected in the merciless lyrics of Rammstein's songs. Right to the heart they hit the Völkerball audience - somewhere between genius and madness, fascination and disgust or lust and pain, just like the music of Rammstein, which presents itself hard and concise, raw and sensitive, from the ground up cold and yet emotional.
