The loyal audience of the Alte Oper already knows: when the Waseda Symphony Orchestra combines Japanese sound culture with Western orchestral music, the two cosms always meet in a profitable way. Ever since the ensemble, which consists exclusively of students from Tokyo University, astonished Herbert von Karajan in 1978, it has been touring the stages of the world. Its impressive sound culture makes one forget that the musicians of this exceptional ensemble are actually all amateurs. In its upcoming concert in Frankfurt, the Waseda Symphony will devote itself to a symphonic "self- and family portrait", Richard Strauss' "Sinfonia domestica". The Waseda Symphony Orchestra flanks the multi-faceted orchestrated home story with the smug operetta tone of Otto Nicolai and the elegiac idiom of Tchaikovsky. And, of course, with Maki Ishii's "MonoPrism" for Japanese drums and orchestra, that intense, pulsating continuum of sound that is one of the Wasedas' showpieces: a musical fresh-cell cure from the Far East.
