Wiesbaden is a city of Art Nouveau. An example of the architecture of this style epoch at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries is the venue of the symphony concerts, the Friedrich-von-Thiersch-Saal in the Kurhaus. Art Nouveau celebrated the cycle of nature, the coming into being and passing away. Curved lines and decorative ornamentation of plant and animal forms adorned the artwork and furniture designs. However, Art Nouveau artists also found their motifs in the chivalric tales of the Middle Ages, which include the story of Pelleas and Melisande, set to music many times.
The final concert of the season, conducted by GMD Patrick Lange, focuses on Arnold Schoenberg's Pelleas composition, one of the last works from the composer's tonal phase. It is the prelude to the Art Nouveau Year 2019, which the Museum Wiesbaden proclaims on the occasion of the opening of its Art Nouveau exhibition.
